“Torneos de Lazo” public display of animal cruelty in Yucatán

Municipal authorities in Sucilá, Yucatán allow the slaughter of animals in the infamous “Torneos de Lazo” in which animal cruelty is displayed disguised as tradition.

Over the weekend, several horses were literally disemboweled in the municipality of Sucilá, at the fair in honor of the Virgin of the Nativity.

Sucila Mayor Diego Lugo Interián said there would be no “Torneo de Lazo“, but only a traditional bullfight.

Eduardo Luis Arceo Massa, president of the Association of Horsemen in Tizimín, regretted that several horses were disemboweled in the municipality of Sucilá, and said that it could’ve been avoided, but the tournament was authorized mayor Lugo Interián.

“It is sad that they disguise this barbaric practice as tradition, use a religious festivity to promote it and include it as part of the municipal fair,” Arceo Massa said.

“People pay to attend these events, and as long as there are people willing to pay for such acts they will never end”, he added.

“The City Council claims that they are not organizing these events, but they are certainly authorizing them, because by law their permission is needed”, he continued.

“Here in Tizimín we don’t have that type of activity, we never hire that kind of bulls that are trained to attack the horses,” he said.

Former mayor and former representative Pedro Couoh Suárez, who in social networks criticizes the “Torneo de Lazo“, lamented that the municipalities promote these events because animals do not deserve to be treated that way.

“Without a doubt it is a bad example for children who attend these shows, but the biggest problem is perversion, this is not part of the traditions of Yucatan. Traditional bullfights are made with bulls from the region, but this is a morbid spectacle, and the organizers have the nerve to sell it as a “tradition”, just to make money, ” Couoh Suárez said.

“At the Tizimín fair, the bulls are released, they participate in the show and at the end, return alive to their ranch. But in the case of Sucilá they use bulls trained to kill horses, they even sharpen their horns,” he explained.

Pedro Couoh Suárez considers it urgent to modify the law, in order to stop municipal authorities who want to continue with this type of barbaric actions.
