People from Campeche whose homes are located near the railways have been told they need to be relocated, and they do ot agree with that government decision.
The federal liaison for the Escárcega-Calkiní section of the Maya Train, Xavier García Romero, said there are 218 houses which are being monitored, because they could be in possible risk, due to its proximity to the railways of the Tren Maya, that will travel at more than 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour) and could cause damage to those constructions due to vibration.
He also said that they will be attentive to the work of convincing and negotiating with citizens, in order to be relocated in areas close to their homes. However, the state capital is the most problematic area, because it will not be possible to relocate people near the Barrio de Santa Lucía, La Ermita and Camino Real.
“There will be people relocated also in the municipalities of Tenabo, Hecelchakán and Calkiní, because homes have to be more than 30 meters away the railways, ”he said.
So far, the Federal Government’s offer is to relocate them to nearby areas, but more than 200 neighbors have already expressed their rejection because they have been living in those homes for more than 20 years, and the government’s commitment was that they would never be removed from their homes.
In any case, García Romero said that there is still time to rethink the project and they will look for the most viable options.
