“Did you know that Super Bowl rings and Major League baseball rings, for teams such as the New York Yankees, are made in Merida?” Yucatan State Secretary of Economic Development and Labor, Mr. Ernesto Herrera Novelo asked the crowd during a press conferece on Monday September 2nd.
“Well, not many people is aware of the fact that this type of expensive jewelry is manufactured here in Mérida. Yucatan has already transcended worldwide in the elaboration of rings, U.S. high school graduation rings are also manufactured here, and soon an advanced design technology will arrive, which will make this industry even more strong in the state,” Herrera Novelo said.
Several Merida based companies that are in the jewelery maquila sector have been operating in the state capital for years. Unarmed pieces, precious stones and diamonds arrive, not only from the United States but from other countries as well, here they are mounted on rings, and then sent back to their countries of origin.
One of the main reasons why this procedure is performed in the Yucatan is the security that prevails, therefore this type of companies have the confidence to transport valuable material in and out of the state.

“The company Saroni Jewelry, is currently operating here and will expand its plant, but the interesting thing is that it will bring the manufacture of flexible rings, which are only made in Europe. That kind of items will arrive and that means that Saroni will have to train their Yucatecan workers in this advanced technology. The material allows the jewel to fit naturally to the owner’s finger,” the Yucatan State Secretary of Economic Development and Labor, Mr. Ernesto Herrera Novelo concluded.
