The Center for Addiction Rehabilitation and Human Development “Despertares” (Awakenings), is warning that the cases of young people addicted to the consumption of methamphetamines and crystal in Yucatan have increased significantly.
Gonzalo Barba San Germán, administrative director of this civil association, mentioned that there are more and more frequent cases of young people addicted to this type of drugs, since many of them are going to “Despertares” to ask for support.
He indicated that the most frequent consumers of crystal may have symptoms such as intense anxiety, confusion, insomnia, mood fluctuation and violent behavior on many occasions. They can also present a series of psychopathic characteristics, including paranoia, visual and auditory hallucinations or delirium tremens, symptoms that can last for months or even years after getting rid of the addiction.
Among the most affected municipalities by the consumption of “hard drugs” (as they are usually known), are Mérida, Buctzotzs, Ticul, Oxkutzcab and Chemax, without minimizing the consumption in other municipalities.
Finally, he said that the battle against drugs has become much more difficult, since previously consumers were using basically alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or solvents, but today we are talking about LSD, crack and methamphetamines.
