Anger in Merida for vandalization of historical monument

The “green scarves” began to appear in Mérida a few months ago, These are used as a symbol of feminist groups fighting for the legalization of abortion nationwide.

On March 8th this year, during an International Women’s Day march, several participants were seen carrying posters and handkerchiefs of the so -called “Green Tide” movement.

That day, they marched with respect and showing their faces, but this was not the casein their most recent protest, held on Saturday September 28th, in downtown Mérida, which resulted in graffiti and damage to the Monument known as “Monumento a la Madre“.

The protesters that marched on Saturday, showed a belligerent, aggressive attitude, which contrasts with the peaceful mood of our beloved Merida, always friendly and above all, respectful of the law.

“They had their faces covered and under that anonymity they damaged a non-religious historic monument, that is the patrimony of the city, of all the Meridans”, wrote a citizen on Instagram.

When someone promotes a concentration of citizens, what is really sought is to attract the attention of society to an issue and seek their solidarity and eventually their support to help them achieve their cause’s goal.

However, the acts of vandalism within the framework of a demonstration in favor of abortion have achieved totally the opposite reaction. The whole Yucatecan society has censored these actions and instead of growing up in followers, the “Green Tide” movement has already lost them.

On social networks, the Meridans demand from their authorities zero tolerance and punishment against those that damaged the heritage of the city, regardless if they are women or minority groups, the vandals have to face their responsibility in these reprehensible acts.

The members of the “Green Tide” showed their aggressive attitude in previous protests, although on those occasions they did not cause damage to the city property, they did attack people.

“These people is getting more violent every time, and it is time to stop them”, a citizen posted on Facebook.

Yucatan has stand out as a state in which criminals and offenders are arrested and punished according to law, hopefully this case will be no exception. Merida does not deserve this type of behavior.
