During the celebration of the Day of Indigenous Peoples, that will be commemorated on August 8, 9 and 10 in Teabo, Yucatan, the Maya local community will celebrate with events aimed at highlighting customs such as herbalism and jarana.
To revalue the traditions and customs of our ancestors among the new generations, the Institute for the Development of the Maya Culture of Yucatan (Indemaya) will commemorate the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, on August 8, 9 and 10.
The municipality of Teabo was chosen as the venue for this important celebration because of the work that is being carried out there to promote and keep alive the Maya traditions among the population.
“Topics related to the activities that are losing their roots among the new generations such as work in the cornfield, arts and crafts manufacture (textiles included), and traditional medicine, among others,” said Erick Villanueva Mukul, director of Indemaya.
Teabo is located 84 kilometers (52 miles) south of Mérida. (INEGI)
“Other activities such as the execution of the jarana dance, the elaboration of handicrafts, the use of the jícara, a pictorial exhibition, workshops and Yucatecan trova music, will be carried out during the days of the celebration. We want to make visible the cultural and human rights of the Maya people from Yucatan”, Villanueva Mukul concluded.
