One fatal heat stroke case registered in Yucatán

The high temperatures prevailing in Yucatan caused the death of one person, reported the federal Ministry of Health, as this is is the first registered case of death from heat stroke in more than three years.

Unfortunately, the situation worsened in recent days due to the beginning of the “canícula“, a period of 40 days during which a greater impact of heat prevails, and that also provokes outbreaks of several diseases.

So far this year, 17 people have died in Mexico as a consequence of the extreme heat (Extreme Natural Temperatures: TNE), the cases are distributed in 11 states, and this figure represents an increase of 240 percent, since only 5 casualties were registered during the same period last year.

During this summer season, the most affected group is 25 to 44 years old, with 41.2 percent of the total cases.

IMSS revealed that of the total number of deaths, three are from Nuevo León, three from Sonora, and two cases from Baja California and Quintana Roo, respectively.

The rest of the victims are from Yucatán, Sinaloa, Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Oaxaca.

Likewise, at national level, during the epidemiological week number 12, corresponding to the heat season, there are already 389 cases of health damage associated with the TNE, distributed in 23 states of the country.

Of the total cases, 184 are due to heat stroke, 196 due to heat exhaustion and nine due to burns caused by the sun.

This week there were 34 new cases of TNE, in 10 states, including Quintana Roo and Yucatán.

So far, in Yucatán there have already been 16 cases, of which nine are related to heat stroke and seven to heat exhaustion.

Yucatán occupies the tenth national place in incidence, followed by Quintana Roo, in the eleventh place, with 12 cases, of which eight are related to heat exhaustion and four to heat shock. Campeche is in position 22, with one case of heat stroke only.

The heat season is characterized by an increase in the temperature, reaching over 40 ° C (105 F°) in some states.

Faced with the increase in temperature, health risks increase due to complications such as dehydration, heat stroke and sunburn due to exposure to high temperatures, as well as diarrheal diseases and conjunctivitis, among other conditions.
