Sergio Antonio Luna Álvarez is an eight-year-old Mexican boy who won the World Championship of Mental Calculation held in China.
GUANGZHOU, China (Agencies) – A Mexican boy won the World Mental Calculation Championship held in Guangzhou, China. Sergio Antonio Luna Alvarez, eight, traveled to the Asian country along with a delegation of 78 kids to compete against 621 children from 16 nations.
The Queretaro boy won the Champions Cup, which is a category higher than first place. His mother, Cynthia Alvarez, explained that Sergio solved, without errors, 70 mathematical operations in a record time of three and a half minutes.
“The competition was on July 20th at 10:00 a.m.. We were all very happy, I noticed Sergio was a little bit nervous one month ago, but right before the competition he was very relaxed, had no anguish or nervousness, was very calm and confident,” said his mom.
Through the program ALOHA Mental Calculation, Sergio Antonio obtained the first place in the children’s category of mental calculation at state level in Querétaro, Mexico. Later he participated in the national contest where he won the “Copa de Excelencia” (Excellency cup).
The method for performing mathematical operations consists of visualizing the Japanese abacus.
Another 49 Mexican children finished the competition within the first places.
