Major Hurricane Barbara Begins Weakening Well Offshore of Mexico

Major Hurricane Barbara hit peak intensity with last night max sustained winds of 134 knots, just one knot shy of category 5 status.

A weakening trend has begun but Barbara continues as a potent cat 4 major hurricane Wednesday morning and forecast to remain at hurricane-strength for the next couple days. Barbara is expected weaken significantly heading into the weekend, potentially passing near Hawaii next week as a remnant low.

While Barbara’s less than ideal location and track will limit swell size for Baja and California somewhat, we’re eyeing fun to locally medium size swell in Southern California and North Baja this week, with decent surf potential for Southern Baja — and even parts of Centraland Northern CaliforniaHawaii’s eastern exposures will see waves from Barbara as well.
