Jungle set on fire to build real estate project in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo

Puerto Morelos.-  12 hectares of forest were consumed in a provoked fire that lasted two weeks and that apparently was caused by a real estate company, with the purpose of building a housing project in this jungle area.

Quintana Roo Firefighters, Civil Protection and Conafor staff managed to contain the fire, and they indicated that it was possibly caused by a Real Estate company.

In past weeks, citizens reported that the fire, which took place only 1.5 kilometers away from Residencial Mareta, was provoked, with videos showing paper and flammable material placed at the base of several trees.

Sebastián Torres Perdigón, a researcher at the UNAM, stated that residents observed how the jungle next to their neighborhood (Residencial Mareta) was set on fire in the middle of the night on July 10th.

The researcher added that the area had been previously delimited with tree logs, to mark exactly where the fire was going to be light up.
