CDMX. – (Notimex) Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador elevated the contingency of the sargasso to national priority, so each week the issue will be evaluated.
Miguel Torruco Marquez, secretary of Tourism of the federal government, said that during the Security Commission meeting, the sargazo will be an obligatory topic to be discussed every Thursday at the 0600 hours meeting. For this reason, AMLO has appointed the Secretary of the Navy, Rafael Ojeda, as the person in charge of the attention to the emergency of the sargasso, who indicated that they currently have a budget of 52 million pesos (2,730,000 USD approximately) to fight the macro algae.
Torruco said that between 2014 and 2018, 800 million pesos were allocated to attend the arrival of the sargasso to the coast of Quintana Roo, however, questioned the fact that there was no strategy in the short or medium term.
Ojeda stressed that the Navy will build 4 “sargaceras” (ships to pick up sargasso) in addition to rehabilitating another sergeacero ship in Sonora, to put them to work in the Mexican Caribbeanthe coasts.
Hoteliers To Apply For Discounts
The Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco-Servytur), reported that hoteliers in the Mexican Caribbean will grant discounts to attract tourism. Among the promotions granted by hotels now that the summer vacation season begins, are discounts that ranges from 15 to 25 percent in the hotel rates, in order to retain occupancy.
Roberto Cintrón, president of the “Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres hoteliers” said they expect an occupancy of 83 percent in the start of the summer vacation, and are confident that this percentage will increase towards the month of August.
