“Prolonged exposure to the sun can have serious consequences for the skin, because the rays are more intense at this time of the year due to the position of the sun and the damage to the ozone layer”, declared a doctor from IMMS in Yucatán.
It is recommended to take precautions such as: wearing hat, glasses, cotton and long-sleeved clothing and applying sunscreen or FPS sunblck more than 30, 20 minutes before going outdoors, to protect the skin, what is most damaged organ of the human body.
He mentioned that exposure to solar radiation in a moderate way is recommended as it helps the production of vitamin “D” in the body, which is responsible for fixing calcium in the bones; However, a prolonged exposure to the sun can have serious consequences for the skin of the people in the Yucatan, that can go from burns, premature aging, reddening of the skin, pigmentation changes, or even more serious consequences such as skin cancer inmany cases, since every individual reacts in a different way to the sun radiation.
He commented that in the face of very high temperatures, some precautions should be taken such as: avoid sun exposure in the hours close to noon, between 11:00 and 16:00 hours, for not more than half an hour, because at that time is when the sun rays are more intense and harmful.
In addition to external physical care, it is recommended to drink enough simple water when exposed to the sun and not consume alcoholic or sugary drinks, as well as avoid very abundant meals because they increase body temperature and can cause heat stroke or dehydration.
It is important to mention that babies under six months old and older adults, need to avoid sun exposure as much as possible, since their skin is very thin and they can easily suffer serious burns.
In children and adolescents the use of sunblock needs to be promoted, as it is scientifically proven that sunburn during adolescense, increases the risk of developing skin cancer in adulthood.
