“According to the National Survey of Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption, the consumption of marijuana among Yucatecans from 12 to 65 years of age, grew from 3.8 to 10 percent between 2008 and 2016, the increase in 2018 was 2%, a figure that could grow significantly, so more preventive measures need to be taken”, said Víctor Roa, Director of the Youth Integration Center (Centro de Integración Juveni CIJ).

In the words of Víctor Roa Muñoz, work is already under way on a new law in the state that is more comprehensive, with a gender focus, since there has been a notorious increase in drug use in women, and authorities are also working on a reform to allow 21 year-old people (or older) to purchase psychoactive substances.

The director of the CIJ said that in this way the use of the drug known as marijuana is trying to be regulated, however, the drug known as “Cristal” has had an increase in the preference of YUcatecan teenagers, and 4 out of 100 admitted to having used this drug at some point in time, so the authorities are trying to speed up the approval of the aforementioned initiatives.
