A Cancun taxi driver was exhibited on social networks after he tried to rip off a group of Peruvian tourists charging them 4,500 pesos for a 12 kilometer (8 miles) trip from the Hotel Zone to Region 96 in West Cancun.

According to the web portal @DePeso, the taxi driver demanded $2,000 pesos more, after the women had already paid him 2,500 pesos for the service.

Región 96 is only 12 kilometers from the hotel zone (INEGI)

These facts were recorded in Cancun, Quintana Roo, on Thursday May 9 and disseminated on social networks where the news quickly became viral.

Police officers arrived to the place where the tourists were arguing with the cab driver, to mediate between the two parties.

The comments against the taxi driver went all over the web and in social networks, where many people stated that this is a frequent practice with tourists, and that the taxi drivers’ abusive behavior is constant in the area of Cancun and Riviera Maya.
