Hummingbirds play an important role in the food web, pollinating a variety of flowering plants, some of which are specifically adapted to pollination by hummingbirds. Some tropical hummingbirds are at risk, like other pollinators, due to habitat loss and changes in the distribution and abundance of nectar plants.
58 species of hummingbirds can be found in Mexico; 12 species are endemic and many of those are vulnerable or endangered.
With the goal of making people aware of the importance of conserving hummingbird habitats, the Santa María de Yucatán Project is offering a conference on April 14th, with the participation of Pierre Medina, representative of the Project, Dr. Raúl Ortiz Pulido and Dr. Vanessa Martínez García, both from the Center for Biological Research of the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo.
The objective of the Santa María de Yucatán Project is to carry out actions to structure gardens for the conservation of hummingbirds in the state of Yucatan.
The conference is taking place on April 14, at a shopping center in Fraccionamiento Las Americas, in the north of Mérida. This is a basic workshop for the implementation of gardens for hummingbirds which objective is to promote the recovery and care of the populations of these birds in Mérida and the rest of the state.
This event is open to the general public and the recovery cost (costo de recuperación) is 200 pesos per person, which includes material for the participant and participation certificate.
In the event, which will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday April 14th, there will also be a photographic exhibition of the species of hummingbirds of the Yucatan, as well as variety of flowering plants for sale which are specifically the type of plants that hummingbirds pollinate.
