The garbage left by visitors in the port of El Cuyo, municipality of Tizimín, Yucatán has become a problem for local residents and municipal authorities.

The people of El Cuyo is starting to wonder if tourism is more harmful than beneficial, as tourists throw waste everywhere, without showing any respect for nature or for their community .

And during this Semana Santa vacation period, the problem got worse, since the number of visitors was higher, and most of these people come from other Yucatán municipalities and they bring their own food and drinks, so they do not consume at any of the local restaurants or stores, and then they leave their garbage all over the place.

The accumulation of garbage was greater than previous years, and the economic spill absolutely not significant for the people of El Cuyo.

On their Facebook account, El Cuyo community stated that ” our beaches were cleaned up on previous days waiting for tourists to arrive during Semana Santa, and the amount of garbage left by them is absolutely outrageous, these people lack of education and common sense is totally evident”.

El Cuyo is located 260 kilometers (162 miles) east of Mérida (INEGI)

On a second post on the early morning hours of Monday April 22nd, El Cuyo Community said:

“This is how the beach area next to the breakwaters turned up at dawn! In a few moments personal of Semarnat and from ur municipal authorities will have a meeting to analyze the situation and try to find a solution for this problem caused by people who do not even show a little bit of respect or education!”.

Staff of the municipal government is already working on the cleaning up the area.
