A sinkhole of around 8 meters wide by 10 meters long suddenly appeared in the middle of a street during the early morning hours of Tuesday April 16th, in Colonia Garcia Ginerés. The cavity is almost 3 meters (10 feet) deep.
This morning, pedestrians and local residents called emergency number 911 to report the sinking of the pavement on Calle 28 (between 29 and 31) in the García Ginerés neighborhood, right behind the Clínica de Mérida.
Authorities informed that the pavement yielded as a consequence of time and the weight of passing vehicles, due to the system of caves that exists in the area, and besides, the place used to be a natural “sascabera” (a place where stone is extracted for consturction use).
Agents of the Ministry of Public Security arrived at the site to protect the surroundings and close the street, while staff of the City of Mérida Public Works Management arrived to analyze the situation and repair the cavity as soon as possible.
Fortunately there were no damaged vehicles or injured people.
