In the next few hours a massive arrival of sargassum is expected in the southern part of the state of Quintana Roo.
According to reports from the Sargazo Cancun Monitoring Network, and satellite images shared by the Laboratory of Optical Oceanography of the University of South Florida, the algae will reach the coasts of Quintana Roo between Thursday 25 and Saturday 27 April.
If the forecasts are correct, large amounts of seaweed will cover the coast from Mahahual all the way up to Tulum.
This would include the Sian-Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, in the municipalities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Tulum.

“For now Cancun “is out of danger“, but we are in constant surveillance to know in advance if this phenomenom will significantly affect the municipality of Benito Juarez,” the Sargazo Cancun Monitoring Network spokesperson said.
Moderate amounts of sargassum can be seen today on the beaches of Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos. But the arrival of seaweed expected for the following days, that will be favored by winds coming from the east, is forecasted as massive.
