Theft, drug dealing, minor attacks, fraud and sexual abuse increased in Yucatan.

MERIDA Yucatán (TYT). – Despite frequent official security announcements about the safety in Yucatan, a recent report shows an increase in several crimes in our state.

According to figures from the “Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública” (Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System) there is an upward trend in the state of Yucatan when it comes to crimes such as burglary and theft with violence, minor attacks, fraud and sexual abuse. There has also been an increase in domestic violence, drug dealing and threats against civilians.

Official figures indicate, that during the month of March 160 burglaries were committed in Yucatán, 40 percent more than in February of this year.

Cases of sexual abuse increased by 38% last month, with 21 reports, compared to 13 in February.

As for narcotics, the figures for March indicate an increase of 42%, with 47 cases registered, compared to 27 during February.

The Secretariat points out that the crime figures refer to cases recorded in investigation files, however these numbers could be much higher since many people do not report criminal activity, since many citizens have a “high level of distrust” in the police and law enforcement authorities.
