“Agricultural production in the Yucatan fell by about 414 thousand tons, corresponding to 15 edible species, mainly grapefruit, beans, corn, watermelon and sorghum”, the Secretariat of Rural Development revealed.
This was the result of several weather related factors during 2017.
However, a profit of more than 280 million pesos was obtained, due to fluctuations in the prices of various products regulated by supply and demand.
During 2017, Yucatecan farmers obtained a production of 5,292,897.95 tons of at least 30 products, both edible and livestock, with a decrease of 7.3 percent, since the previous year was 5,707,287 tons.
The value of production was 3.9 billion pesos, with an increase of 7.6 percent compared to 2016, when the amount was 3.6 billion pesos.
The highest production was pastures and meadows, with a volume of 4.7 billion tons, 90.6 percent of the total obtained during 2017, with a value of about 2 billion pesos.
The Yucatecan field also generated:
- 146,134.19 tons of orange
- 111,428.25 tons of corn in grain
- 74,244.28 tons of lemon
- 35,515.38 tons of cucumber
- 18,271.89 tons of papaya
- 17,804.3 tons of soy
- 14,419.82 tons of zucchini
- 11,084.19 tons of tangerine
There were several factors that caused the decrease in production registered during 2017, and according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the climatic factor played a fundamental role.
In the first seven months of that year, moderate and dry drought predominated, affecting most of the municipalities in the State.
