Yucatecan fishermen will go out to sea armed with guns and harpoons to defend themselves from thieves

Before the constant siege on the part of the so-called “Pirates of the High Seas” off the coasts of the state of Yucatán, which have ravaged Progreso for several years now, the fishermen say they will not be afraid of going out to sea, and they will do so armed with harpoons and guns for self defense .

The local fishermen indicated that, in spite of the ban of the grouper, many boats and vessels go out fishing in search of other options, due to the obvious need they have to make a living and support their families. And now, in the presence of these criminals, they can no longer work out on the ocean with peace of mind.

Many of the species of greater commercial value that can be captured in the coasts of the state, are obtained at dawn or on the early morning hours, when it still dark, and in the middle of the gloom, the Progreso fishermen have become victims of these criminals that go out to sea armed with guns, looking to steal motors.

Therefore, local fishermen stated that they will remain alert at all times, and they will defend themselves with harpoons and guns, because they can not allow this situation to continue, and authorities are doing nothing to help them.

Finally, the fishermen asked the port authorities to increase the lines of communication, in order to make their formal complaints with the local police and the Navy in a timely manner.
