The deputy chairman of the environment committee of the State Congress, Harry Gerardo Rodríguez Botello Fierro, denounced that several municipal presidents are still reluctant to end animal abuse and specifically with the activity known as “Torneo de Lazo“.
In this regard, the Yucatecan legislator remarked that in many occasions the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) has tried to move forward to eradicate animal abuse in the State and indicated that, although the sixtieth legislature has already passed the law that punishes those who hurt animals in any way, these bad practices persist in several municipalities.
“These events need to be eradicated, “Torneo de Lazo” has to disappear because it is against the law”, Rodríguez Botello assured when questioned by the press. However, Municipal Presidents across the state insist that these festivities are part of the local “uses and customs”.
On the other hand, the Human Rights Commission of the State of Yucatan (Codhey) has complained about the lack of interest of the municipal governments in prohibiting the entry of minors into bullfighting spectacles, as happens with the Torneo de Lazo.
According to reports from the Human Rights Commission, up to now only 18 out of the 106 municipalities have accepted the general recommendation that comes from the report that the United Nations (UN) issued in 2015, where the Mexican government was asked to regulate the entry of children and teenagers to bullfighting shows.
The municipal administrations that have accepted this recommendation are: Tzucacab, Baca, Cuncunul, Panabá, Tekit, Kaua, Yaxcabá, San Felipe, Dzemul, Chumayel, Yobaín, Tunkás, Tinum, Tizimín, Samahil, Temax and Mérida.
