A representation of the X-Tabay and the treaditional “Dance to the Corn”, were some of the activities carried out last Saturday March 16th at the “Pre-escolar 5 de Febrero” in the municipality of Tzucacab.
Dressed in typical costumes, the students, which belong to the indigenous Maya ethnic group, arrived accompanied by their parents to celebrate the International Day of Mother Tongues.
As part of the activities that were carried out, an exhibition of traditional Maya gastronomy was held, including typical food, drinks and sweets of the region.
There was also an exhibition of different types of medicinal plants that have been used to treat and alleviate illnesses by Maya families throughout hundreds of years.
The activities were carried out in an atmosphere of happiness and joy among students and parents and teachers.
Parents and teachers alike stressed the importance of children being proud of their roots and declared that children are taught to be proud of their Maya identity from an early age.
The teachers recognized and appreciated the participation of mothers because the food and drinks were prepared by them.
As part of the celebration the children performed several Jarana dances dressed in traditional Yucatecan clothing, typical of the region.
The coordinated work between the teachers and parents of the school was highlighted by all attendees, because the people in this town have always been collaborative and participatory in all the activities that take place at this school in the municipality of Tzucacab.
