Cozumel kicks off commemoration of 500th anniversary of Hernán Cortés’ arrival to Mexico

As part of the actions that the City of Cozumel carries out to promote culture and traditions, the Municipal President, Pedro Joaquín Delbouis, announced the annual program of activities to kick off the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Hernán Cortés to Mexico The meeting of two cultures !, which began precisely with the arrival of Spanish men to the island of Cozumel, as part of an expedition that sailed out of Cuba.

At a press conference, held at the Municipal Palace, in the presence of the Federal Representative, Adriana Teissier Zavala, and the President of the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics, Hugo Roberto Castro Aranda; the Municipal President said that as of today, the inhabitants and visitors can enjoy throughout the year presentations of local and Spanish symphonic bands, they can admire the contribution of local and foreign muralists who will donate their art to the community, as well as participate in lectures and plays, which will be carried out free of charge.

“Cozumel is the first destination in Mexico to start this commemoration; we do not celebrate a conquest, but we do acknowledge the fact that this encounter gave rise to the birth of present-day Mexico. I thank the Federal Deputy, Adriana Teissier Zavala, for her support to the people of  Cozumel in carrying out these activities. As this event will also be celebrated in different parts of the country, “said Pedro Joaquín.

On the other hand, Adriana Teissier Zavala, thanked the invitation of the Municipal President, Pedro Joaquín Delbouis.

“Today we are working hand in hand with the Municipal President of Cozumel, Pedro Joaquín Delbouis, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Spanish Hernán Cortés to this prosperous municipality,” said the federal legislator.

Meanwhile, the President of the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics, Hugo Roberto Castro Aranda, thanked the support that Pedro Joaquín Delbouis has given to the organizers of this festivity that commemorates the meeting of two worlds.


In the month of May, the Subdirectorate of Culture will make a representation of the arrival of the Spaniards, commanded by Juan de Grijalva 500 years ago, to the coasts of Cozumel. Among the crew was chaplain Juan Díaz Núñez, who celebrated the first Mass in Mexico, 500 years ago.

In October, islanders and tourists will be able to enjoy concerts of Symphonic Orchestras from Mexico and Spain, on the Esplanade of the Flag, in downtown Cozumel.

While the murals that are being painted in different urban areas, will be a permanent reminder of the 500 years of the arrival of Hernán Cortés to the island of Cozumel.
