Municipal government began installing cultural-sites signage along Mérida’s downtown

With an investment of 170,000 pesos, the municipal government of Mérida started installing signage for tourists and locals to find cultural sites in the downtown area, the placement of 37 signs is expected to be completed in the following days.

For a week, staff of the Culture Department has been working on the installation of urban signage in response to a citizen request by the Red Alterna group, so that citizens can be able to detect the location of alternative cultural forums, in order to visit them.

In this regard the director of the municipal office, Irving Berlin Villafaña, explained that the infrastructure is placed in the central avenues near each forum, so that they are visible.

Based on the information provided, the project will be developed in three stages throughout the year; the first stage that is about to conclude in the coming days, foresees the placement of 37 signs, with an investment of 170 thousand pesos.

“Red Alterna asked us to design urban signage to indicate where these cultural sites are located, so that whoever is on the street or on a central avenue can know how to get to these alternative sites such as “El Tapanco”, the “Pedrito” theater, the “Rubén Chacón” forum or the “Crésida Danza” Berlin Villafaña explained.

He stressed that this initiative will benefit those cultural spaces, but also the general public, since they will be able to visit them, learn about the events that take place there throughout the year, and this action will also strengthen the promotion, dissemination and recognition of cultural activities.

The number of alternative spaces in the city has been increasing, so much, that today we have cultural sites of different nature, including 33 galleries, 12 forums and independent theater groups, comprehensive cultural centers, dance centers and private museums managed by citizens

“This year everything must be finished, the first stage will be ready in four or five days, we are talking about five or six cultural centers and then we will continue with the second and third stages, we started last week and it is a process of 10 to 15 days of installation. With the support of Desarrollo Urbano we designed the signage and then we processed the permits with INAH, for the approval and installation of the street signs in the historic center of the city, ” Irving Berlin Villafaña concluded.
