Mexico City will retain its approvement, while the rest of the country remains without authorization.
Verónica Juárez Piña, Coordinator of PRD representatives declared: “The PRD in the Commissions of the Chamber of Representatives wants to allow legal abortion throughout the country until the 12th week of gestation, as is currently the case in Mexico City, but at the moment, all we can do is wait to seek a greater consensus among the legislators”.
This was said by the promoter of this legal change at national level and coordinator of PRD “diputados” , noting that the initiative seeks to standardize the rights of all women in Mexico in terms of the termination of pregnancy.
Although Mexico City is a pioneer regarding this rule to expand the causes of abortion, there is doubt among some legislators of the majority group, Morena, regarding whether it is the right moment to approve this legal amendment throughout the country or not.
In the same way, the Social Encounter Party (PES), of which a large part of its members and leaders are part of the evangelical-Christian community of Mexico, are reluctant to approve the decriminalization of abortion in all Mexican territory.
