8 new cases of Chagas disease in chronic phase detected in Yucatán

This adds to 35 infections of the disease transmitted by the insect known as” pic ” during February in Yucatán.

Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis is a systemic infection caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi.

The cases of Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis in chronic phase continue to appear every week in the statistics of the Federal Ministry of Health, which in its most recent report corresponding to epidemiological week No. 7, which goes from February 10th to the 16th, reported eight new infections.

However, as we published, the Ministry of Health of Yucatan (SSY) indicated that the cases that are registered in the Epidemiological Bulletin are considered probable until confirmation is made by the State Public Health Laboratory.

35 infections of the disease transmitted by the insect known as “pic” (kissing bug), have been registered this month in our state, according to the SSY, and more could be confirmed in the quarterly report that will be issued by the Federal Health Secretariat in April.

The danger of this condition lies in its high prevalence, its incurability, the large economic losses due to work incapacity and the sudden death of apparently healthy people.

The evolution of Chagas disease is divided into three phases: acute, chronic early or indeterminate and chronic.
In the first, there are no symptoms in about 70% of those infected and it occurs more often in children.
