“Yucatan is ready for the sixth edition of the Mérida Triathlon that will take place on February 2 and 3. The city of Mérida expects to receive more than 6,800 visitors,” announced the head of the Secretariat of Tourism Development (Sefotur), Michelle Fridman Hirsch, at a press conference .

Accompanied by the directors of the Mérida Triathlon, Mauricio Álvarez Martínez; of AsDeporte, Wilbert Moguel Flores, and  Carlos Sáenz Castillo head of the Sports Institute (IDEY), the official announced the details of this circuit, which will begin in Progreso and conclude in the state capital.

This annual event has its origin in 2014 and has fulfilled its objectives within the sports tourism that, every year, registers notable increases in the number of participants. At the same time, it has managed to consolidate and strengthen this practice in the state.

In the presence of the Director of Social Welfare of the City of Mérida, Jorge Gamboa Wong, and the Deputy Director of Tourism of Progreso, María José Ongay Esquivel, the head of Sefotur said that this type of event is important for Yucatan because it generates culture, gastronomy , entertainment and health for the people of Yucatán.

“This allows us to decentralize the benefits of tourism because it starts in Progreso and ends up in Mérida, few places have the characteristic of being close enough to create a dual tourist destination,” she said before the coordinator of the Federal Police in the state, commissioner Roberto Raúl Rodríguez Rivero, and Lieutenant Lidia Grisel Santiago Canché from Progreso’s Port Authority.

In turn, Fridman Hirsch referred to the results obtained during the first 100 days of the administration of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, featuring large increases in tourist indicators, especially in the last quarter of the year with respect to the arrival of visitors and in the economic benefit for the state.

In the same way, she highlighted the importance of increasing the air connectivity, with two new flights, one from León, Guanajuato, and the other from Villahermosa. She recalled that four more flights will be released in March, destined for Oaxaca, Chihuahua, Tijuana and Hermosillo.

Before concluding her message, she delved into the current participation of Yucatan in the State Fair of Leon and its next intervention in the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) 2019, which will be held in Madrid from January 23 to 27, where the state will promote its natural, archaeological, gastronomic and cultural tourist attractions.

About the Triathlon, in its first five editions, 7,494 competitors participated, with an average of 2.5 companions each, which in total left an economic profit of 21,535, 777 pesos.

In 2018 alone 22,258 ,084 pesos were registered and, this year, it is expected to increase to 24 million. Of the 1,768 registered on that occasion, 1,255 came from other states of the Republic; 463, from Yucatán; 21, from the United States; 14, from Canada; six, from Spain; two, from England; another two from Australia, and one, from France.

For this time the arrival of 1,900 contenders is contemplated, with an average of 2.5 companions, which means that about 6,800 people will arrive in the territory and will spend approximately 3.2 nights.
