Bad Day for Progreso: “Carnival Valor” passengers, not big spenders

PROGRESO, YUC.- After the bad weather generated by cold front 31, which struck on Sunday Jan. 27 at 11:30 AM, the beach of the Malecon awoke on Tuesday Jan. 29 with better conditions for the tourists of the “Carnival Valor” cruiser.

The “Carnival Valor” arrived with 3,198 passengers, but only 300 remained in the city, the rest took the tours to the archaeological sites of Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Dzibilchaltun.

A Progreso hat vendor said: “Most of the foreigners who came on the Valor had beards, long hair and tattoos on hands, arms, legs and back; most of them wore black shirts. They looked like rock’nrollers, most of them only spent money on beer, they did not buy any handicrafts, they did not set foot on any of local the restaurants, they only walked along the beach with their beers in hand”.

So Tuesday Jan. 29 was not a good day for Progreso’s tourist service providers, because the few tourists who stayed at the port, did not leave a good economic spill for the port businesses, unlike the passengers of the “Carnival Fantasy” that arrived on Monday Jan. 28th.

Just a few passengers hired massages. Some rented jet skis to ride in front of the boardwalk. And the bananas did not have absolutely any customers at all, so their operators had a very bad “Crucero” day.

The beach still has some seaweed, but there are parts that were cleared off with machinery by the City Council and restaurants’ staff.

Actually I did buy a handcrafted turtle for 20$ spent 10$ on a lounge chair for an hour. And gave to a couple people begging for money. If I were to give in to EVERY person that hassled me and made me want to leave because I couldn’t relax, then I would have spent $30,000. Sorry people were offended. I was offended at being constantly begged for money. try selling more beer then.

We were there, the locals don’t give you 4 seconds to look at anything without crawling into your personal space and annoying you with overly trying to sell stuff to you… When will they learn, americans want to shop by themselves, and bring our products to the counter. We don’t want you following us around and asking us if we want each product you sell… We have eyes… We can see what you got… When we see what we like, then try to barter with us if you want. But standing at your store front yelling at us like the idiot mall kiosk people, will only make us walk away faster, and not spend ANYTHING. They scared their sales away this day in question. Your fault Progresso, not carnivals, not ours.
