In order to attract more people to the big supply centers of the city, the Subdirectorate of Markets of the City of Mérida carries out an analysis to determine the strategies that could make them more attractive for tourists and locals alike. And the proposal is to organize cultural events at the local mercados.

Álvaro Alejandro Gil Sandoval, deputy director of Markets of Mérida’s City Hall, said that they are currently working in the organization of cultural events at the Lucas de Gálvez and San Benito markets, however, there are others, such as Chem Bech and Chuburna, where they are planning to carry out actions for its promotion.

“We are working on a plan which involves different municipal agencies such as Social and Economic Development, as well as Culture, because many times that type of space not only need to improve in terms of infrastructure logistics, but also in terms of offering different activities for citizens and toursits to come to them.

“We are conductig meetings to find out the tenants’ opinions and prioritize the works that are needed, as well as the actions that have to be carried out. We can not only focus on the problems of Lucas de Gálvez and San Benito, since there are other markets such as Chem Bech, Cordemex, Chuburna, Mulsay and San Roque, just to mention a fes, which also need investment and promotion, ” the official said.

“The idea is to implement programs that are useful both for people who come to the markets and for merchants, but everything has to be done based on developing communication channels so that people feel close to the municipal authorities,” Álvaro Alejandro Gil Sandoval concluded.
