To give greater coverage to the numerous requests received by the Facades Rescue Program (Programa de Rescate de Fachadas), the Merida’s Municipal Urban Development Department analyzes the possibility of increasing the number of workers in the Department of Cultural Heritage Areas that are currently remodeling facades all over the downtown area.
The scheme was implemented since the 1990s for the conservation of the Historical Monuments Zone of the city, which consists of 3,906 properties, covering a total area of 8,795 square meters.
Through the scheme, the goal is to rescue a total of 228 facades located in different parts of the Merida’s “Centro Histórico“.
In this regard, the head of the municipal agency, Federico Sauri Molina, reported that 25 to 30 applications for the program are received at the office every month.
“We are looking to increase the number of workers of the City Council; the program is permanent and it is a priority for this department. Right now we have 30 people assigned to that particular project, they are working in different points of the city, in collaboration with the properties’ owners , “he explained.
Sauri Molina added that as part of the work of restoration and painting, the general maintenance of emblematic buildings of the City Council such as the Centro Cultural Olympo and the Directorate of Culture are contemplated.
