Organ donation culture increases in Yucatan

September 17, 2018 (ACOM) .- The culture of organ donation has been increasing in Yucatan in recent years, which has allowed several people to continue their lives with good health.

In this regard, Luis Castro Aviles, technical secretary of the State Transplant Center of Yucatan (Cetry), said that currently the state of Yucatán has maintained an average of nine organ procurement cadaveric patients (organ donors) per million inhabitants, when the national figure is four.

The specialist said that it is important that citizens maintain the culture of organ donation, as this will allow those who require them to maintain their life expectancy.

He explained that last year, 66 transplants of cadaveric patients were completed, a figure that is expected to be exceeded in 2018.

Regarding the waiting list, Castro Avilés said that the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) has about 400 patients waiting to receive an organ or tissue, while at the “Agustin O’Horán” hospital there are another 30 names on the list. The High Specialty Regional Hospital of Mérida and private clinics also have a waiting list, although on a smaller scale.

“The organs that are most needed are corneas, followed by kidneys, heart and liver. In the case of corneas, we practically do not have a waiting list, since we have a tissue bank for patients who require it” he said.

Castro Avilés recalled that next September 26, the National Day of Organ Donation and Transplantation will be commemorated, for which several activities will be carried out to promote the importance of this activity among the citizenship.

  • Monday Sep. 24 national children’s drawing contest on the subject of transplants, at the Health Center of Mérida.
  • Tuesday Sep. 25, a concert will be offered in favor of organ donation at the Health Center of Mérida.
  • Wednesday Sep. 26 there will be a conference on the current status of transplants in Mexico, given by Josefina Arbelú Gómez, president of the Mexican Society of Transplants, at the IMSS auditorium.
  • Thursday, Sep. 27, a conference will be offered by Jorge López Villegas, donation coordinator of the O’Horán Hospital, in the auditorium of this hospital.
