On July 30, the Mini Olympics 2018 started in Oxkutzcab, Yucatán, with the participation of 400 children. These games are organized by the local parish of San Francisco de Asis.
The sporting, recreational and spiritual event began with a small parade of children, who marched according to their age, carrying flags and other objects representatives of different Mexican cultures, including Maya, Aztec, Olmec, Purépecha, Toltec, Huasteca, Zapoteca, Mixteca and Chichimeca.
Each delegation of children was accompanied by their respective guides.
The central figure of the event was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, who was asked to bless the Mexican people, “as she always does.” Later a floral offering was offered to the venerated “Guadalupana” which the children decorated with green, white and red flowers.
In a message, the parish priest Manuel Jesús Pech Aguilar thanked the parents for letting their children take part of the Mini Olympics, he also thanked the people who helped make this event a reality, and all the volunteers for the great organization.
“This year the project aims to take a look at our country, Mexico, to look at each other as brothers and sisters, and consider the different indigenous peoples of our country,” Pech Aguilar said.
The priest reiterated that through the Mini Olympics all Mexican PreHispanic cultures will be remembered, valued, and honored through the participation of the children of Oxkutzcab.
