Riviera Maya, Q. Roo.- The luxury hotel and residential complex, Andaz Mayakoba, joins the preservation of the environment and replaces plastic straws with biodegradable avocado seed straws.

In a statement, the hotel complex of the Riviera Maya and owned by the Hyatt hotel chain, said that this idea began when Scott Munguía, a Mexican student who studied Chemical Engineering at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in Mexico City, specialized in bioplastics technology, started researching on a sustainable material that could replace plastic for straw manufacture.

After years of research, it was in 2011 that he managed to isolate a biopolymer made from avocado seed, a technological breakthrough with which he ended up founding his own company, BioFase.

According to the information issued by biofase.com.mx, the company is dedicated to develop sustainable products from different natural sources (such as the avocado seed), through a patented technology.

The company works on three types of products: resins, biodegradable cutlery and specialized products and projects.

According to BioFase, the biodegradation time of the avocado seed straw after its use is approximately 90-240 days compared to those of plastic that can take up to 400 years to degrade.

“Andaz Mayakoba has a great commitment to the preservation and improvement of ecosystems worldwide. As an ecological destination, we have established an alliance with BioFase to take care of the environment and preserve nature. Andaz Mayakoba is home to a wide diversity of flora and fauna, which makes it a unique destination to visit,” the statement concluded.
