Delta Air Lines and its partner airline Aeromexico are canceling their direct flight from Atlanta to Merida, Mexico, after just seven months, according to published reports.
The last direct flight between the two cities is August 20.
Merida, about a three-hour drive west of Cancun in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is becoming a popular tourist destination. But volume on the once-daily flight apparently was not enough to make the route profitable.
Government officials and executives of Delta Air Lines reportedly had high hopes for the route, in part because Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world’s busiest. But historically, more international tourists have traveled to Merida from the airports of Miami, Houston, Los Angeles and New York than from Atlanta.
