As part of the preparations to celebrate the 50 years of the foundation of Cancun, in the year 2020, civil associations presented to the State Secretariat of Education and Culture a proposal to build the Historical Museum of the city.

According to the preliminary project that was announced on July 4, this historic museum will have its foundations in the current “Doctor Enrique Barocio” library, which is located on Chichen Itza Avenue, downtown Cancun, according to news agency Notimex.

It was said that this proposal seeks to modernize its facilities and display archives and objects, as well as photographs that make up a historical collection of this young municipality.

The document was presented during the second meeting of the Commission of Labor and Social Welfare and that of Education, Culture and Sport of the municipal government, in the presence of officials involved with the Municipal Institute of Planning (Implan), and representatives from the Institute of Culture and the Arts, among others.

Representing the state government was the Undersecretary of Education in the North Zone, Carlos Gorocica Moreno.

“The name will not be changed, nor will it cease to be a library, it will only be updated and improved in order to turn it into a museum”, informed the councilor Berenice Sosa Osorio, president of the commission of Education of the municipal administration.

In an interview, she pointed out that the main objective is to have a space at the service of society and open to the public, in which they have all the necessary information from Cancun for the conservation, education and research of their own homeland and also to serve tourism.
