In a press conference, after his meeting with Peña Nieto, AMLO said that he will not travel on the presidential plane and that he will dispense with the protection of the Presidential Guard.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated that the budget he will exercise in 2019 will already include adjustments to the salaries of senior officials, including his own, which he said will reduce by half of what President Enrique Peña Nieto currently earns. This measure comes with the intention of fulfilling his promises to give economic support to students and seniors.
During his first message to the media after meeting with President Enrique Peña Nieto, AMLO assured that he will not travel on the presidential plane or in the helicopters available to the Head of State. In addition, he insisted that he will dispense with the protection of the Estado Mayor Presidencial — EMP (Presidential Guard) and put “the people” in charge of his protection.
Regarding the Free Trade Agreement, he said that this process will still be led by the current negotiation team, to which he attributed having done things well up to now. He mentioned that later Carlos Urzúa will join, next in charge of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit.
He also said that he will soon meet with Mike Pompeo, Luis Videgaray and Enrique Peña Nieto, as part of the security talks held by the governments of Mexico and the United States.
On his meeting with Peña Nieto, he said that he had been very respectfuland that the president invited him to attend the meeting of the Pacific Alliance, in Puerto Vallarta, on July 24. “There was no factional intervention by the government in these elections and I appreciate it,” said the next president of Mexico.
