Progreso, Yucatán, July 28, 2018.- As part of the actions for the conservation of the turtle of Carey, the beach of the Costa Club Vacation Center, in Yucalpetén, (Municipality of Progreso, Yucatán), a total of 117 specimens were integrated into its natural habitat, the baby turtles hatched from the protected nests located within this complex, that belongs to the Yucatán’s Social Security Institute of State Workers (Isstey).
“Our wish is that all of them reach adulthood,” said the director general of the agency, Gabriela Cáceres Vergara, who head the release of these animals with the enthusiastic participation of children and adults guests of the hotel, who previously heard a talk on education and environmental awareness, by biologists from the Center for Technological Studies of the Sea number 17.
The presence of the Isstey is part of the international effort for the protection of this species in critical danger of extinction, which was incorporated by the State Government in 1990.
Collaborators of all ages followed the instructions of the biologists when integrating the young: they kept silent, avoided the use of flash with their cell phones, and enjoyed the moment when the neonates were deposited in the sand by the biologists. They all watched how the little turtles looked for the light of the moon and went straight into the sea.
