The Mérida International airport opened a new space exclusive for all mothers who are in the fortunate situation of being able to breastfeed their new born children.
This new space is called the “Chuchú Room” (Chuchú is the Maya word for breast), and it was recently inaugurated at the Mérida International Airport for the benefit of passengers and women who work in the terminal.
“This as a commitment of Grupo ASUR in support of the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the United Nations, and as a socially responsible company, invites us to create conditions that improve nutrition in nursing infants” expressed Mr. Héctor Navarrete Muñoz, Regional Airport Director of ASUR Group during the inauguration ceremony.
Out of a total of 2800 employees that work in the Yucatecan air terminal, 597 are women, And during the first quarter of this year, more than 576,000 passengers passed through this airport.
The “Chuchú Room” features comfortable ergonomic furniture, two chairs, a changing table, and a television, and is at the service in the lobby of the upper deck of the airport.
According to data from the World Health Organization, only 40% of infants under 6 months are lucky enough to receive breast milk as exclusive nourishment.
