In the inauguration of the EFE Tourism Forum “Sector Hotelier in Mexico: financing and challenges”, the state tourism secretary, Marisol Vanegas Pérez said that the world tourism sector recorded in 2017 the highest growth of the last 20 years by setting an average rate of 6.5%. Quintana Roo exceeded that average with 7.5%, while the general growth of the country was less than 3%.

The head of SEDETUR highlighted the data offered by a German agency specializing in the subject, where the business sector has the largest increase, with 18%; while the rural one registered an increase of 6%; the mountain, 7%, and the sun and beach, 9%.

This growth in the tourism sector, represented the largest attraction of foreign currency in 2017, with 21 billion US dollars, an increase of 60% compared to 2012, which was a particularly good year .

The state official warned that, despite being the best results in the sector, the world’s tourism destinations are conditioned to meet the demands of growth: greater infrastructure, orderly growth and care for the environment.

In this regard, with the objective of maintaining growth rates, it is necessary to consider new strategies that allow destinations to maintain their competitiveness.

In Quintana Roo, the National Bank of Public Works and Services (Banobras), is already working on generating the association of private capital companies with the State Government to carry out projects such as the expansion of the Cancún-Tulum highway, as well as beach recovery works.
