Mérida has more or less one million people, but we are going to talk about a small part of it: the 3.5-mile area anchored by the Plaza Grande, the main square.

The historic center contains about 20,000 properties with historical value, of which between 3,000-4,000 are ruins. Of those, 34 percent were beyond repair when that report was written in 2011.

Mérida’s Centro Histórico is one of the biggest historic districts in Latin America. This is where a growing community of Expats are discovering a laid-back, affordable lifestyle filled with high culture, great food and a welcoming community.

The reasons for Mérida’s growing popularity can be attributed to many intangibles which have been artfully detailed in numerous travel magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times Travel Section and its Fashion Magazine supplement.

Many an editorial has been shared showcasing different perspectives on the state capital of Yucatán. Making clear that besides being a city of quaint, time-honored traditions — Mérida is becoming an emerging center of art, culture and fashion.

Fact is the Expat community in “La Ciudad Blanca” is growing exponentially and tourism is booming too…
