“Crews of at least 50 river boats fish octopus furtively in Sisal waters”, denounced some of the local fishermen who requested anonymity to avoid reprisals. Their complainants assure that an entrepreneur who is part of an association related to fishing is one of the buyers of the mollusk in that port of the western part of Yucatan.
The unhappy fishermen say that on average each boat collects 50 kilograms of octopus per day and they sell it at 85 pesos per kilo, which means that each boat gets $ 4,250 pesos a day.
The fishermen denounce that they also catch grouper, a species that is forbidden from February 1 to March 31.
On Thursday March 1, fishermen from several ports met in Progreso and reported that all the species that are supposed to be banned, are actually being fished, all along the Yucatan coast from Celestún to El Cuyo.
