MÉRIDA, Yuc.- 2018 will be a great year not only for tourism of conventions but for health tourism in Yucatan, due to the inauguration of the International Congress Center (CIC), the opening of new hotels and the reinforced regional, national and international air connectivity, according to the Secretariat of Tourism Promotion (Sefotur) and the Tourist Business Council of Yucatan (Cetur).
The head of Sefotur, Saul Ancona Salazar, stressed that the new CIC, that will be officially inaugurated in April, will have a capacity to host conventions of up to six thousand people, which translates into a significant economic spill for the city of Mérida, and opens the door for massive events.
“The business and conventions segment represents an attractive market for our State, since this type of traveler spends approximately three times more than the average tourist,” Saúl Ancona said.

The director of Mexi Meetings, a Merida based company dedicated to the organization of meetings and conventions, Adriana Sunza Bouloy, stressed that this year will be good for the tourism sector in Yucatan, since reservations for Mérida increased by 30 percent in 2017 in comparison with the previous year, and 2018 started with record figures.
“The outlook for this sector is very promising, and with the new Convention Center, the city becomes a stronger destination. The advertising strategy implemented by SEFOTUR at national and international level has been highly effective, and for this year, we expect the growth is between the 25 and the 30 percent in congresses”, Sunza Bouloy said.
On the other hand, the leader of the Cetur, Jorge Escalante Bolio, emphasized that in the first six months of the year about 50 conventions will be carried out in Mérida, and the most important ones are focused on the health sector, either medical or veterinary.
