At the beginning of 2018, the figures show that the upward statistics continue when it comes to suicides in Yucatan, since the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reports in these first 65 day of the year, show 29 cases, a figure similar to that of 2017.
The state agency confirmed that the last five suicides in the state were recorded, on the eve of Valentine’s day and that most cases are related to depression, another mental disorder that commonly afflicts a large percentage of the local population.
Of the total 29 registered suicides, it was alarming to see that a child only 11 years old took his own life in the municipality of Kanasín.
As a reference, in 2017, 192 suicides were registered in Yucatan, while in 2016 the number was higher, with 220.
On the other hand, according to the report of the Federal Health Secretariat, at the beginning of the year, 119 new cases of people suffering depression in Yucatan were detected, which means that on average, 24 people are diagnosed with this problem each week at the public health centers in the state.
The Epidemiological Bulletin of this dependency specified that in the first five weeks of 2018, 93 new cases of women and 26 of men suffering from this mental disorder were confirmed.
In 2017, 2,398 people with depression were detected in the state of Yucatán, which is a record figure.
As indicated by the historical data of the Epidemiological Bulletins, last year 1,743 patients were confirmed with this mental disorder , featuring 655 men and 1,098 women.
Specialists in mental health claim that the symptoms associated with depression have an incidence on the number of suicide cases and among the factors are abandonment in personal care, insomnia, and cognitive deterioration, among others.
