CANCUN — What was deemed a complicated travel year for Cancun and Riviera Maya turned out to be a year of increased visitors and added frequencies.
Airlines such as Southwest, Delta and Spirit added flights into the Cancun International Airport in 2017, allowing more passengers from the US and Canada to enjoy a Mexico vacation. The popular beach destinations of Cancun and Riviera Maya saw an increase in visitor traffic with hotel occupancy rates above 80 percent.
The flow of Canadian travelers was up this year with 1.9 million Canucks making their way to Cancun and Riviera Maya beaches for their annual winter thaw, reports the Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico (CPTM), who adds that they are anticipating that number to rise to 2.1 million by the end of 2018.
“It is more attractive for Canadians to go to Mexico where their money is worth more,” says Cimear Mendoza, director for Canada of CPTM.
He said that Canadian travelers to Mexico varied, and that those headed to Cancun and Riviera Maya were mostly from the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba at 55 percent. Others headed to Mexico City 24 percent, Puerto Vallarta-Nayarit 10 percent, Los Cabos 4 percent, Huatulco and Cozumel 2 percent.
The increase in passengers and flight frequencies brought about the reconstruction of the Cancun International Airport, with major renovations and a completely new Terminal 4.
