MÉRIDA, Yucatán.-During the Day of the Nutritionist in Mexico (January 29) electronic tablets were delivered for free to nearly 300 elementary school teachers in Mérida, in order to continue with the actions to prevent childhood obesity in the state of Yucatán.
The tablets featured the web application called MercaDIFto, an interactive game for children that helps teachers to instruct them in the importance of eating healthy food, excercise and feel better about themselves. Besides, the tablets also contain the Municipal Nutrition Guide, which can also be found on the website: www.merida.gob.mx/mercadifto.
Merida mayor Maria Fritz Sierra pointed out that, due to the diagnostics that place our municipality and State among the first places in obesity nationwide, former mayor Mauricio Vila implemented urgent actions on this subject.
At the event, held at the “Silvio Zavala Vallado” auditorium of the Olimpo Cultural Center, the president of the Peninsular Medical Nutrition College, Teresita Puerto Herrera, congratulated the City for the effort to carry out this strategy which results will be seen in the short, medium and long term.
Likewise, Eduardo Berzunza Rivero, director of the “Agustín Franco Villanueva” elementary school, thanked the City Council for the implementation of this innovative educational/interactive online tool.
“We hope to see this program in all the schools of Mérida and throughout the State, since it has undoubtedly been a great opportunity to make a change, advance in the combat of this dangeorus desease and build new knowledge,” Berzunza Rivero concluded.
