Mauricio Góngora, former mayor of Playa del Carmen arrested in Mexico City

Mauricio Góngora Escalante, former mayor of Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, was arrested on Thursday, January 25, as confirmed by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Quintana Roo.

Góngora Escalante was arrested in Mexico City while he was leaving a supermarket with his wife Cynthia Osorio.

According to a video and two pictures published on social networks and news webistes, the politician currently wears a thick beard, and he was caught while walking the streets using glasses, baseball cap and a blue jacket.

The capture was in charge of agents of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of Quintana Roo and Ministerial agents of the Mexico City, who transfered him to Chetumal.

“Góngora Escalante is accused of Irregular Performance of the Public Function, based on a judicial procedure released by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Quintana Roo. He is also related to the case of Vipsaesa, and is attributed a loss to the treasury for 594 million pesos”, expained the anti-corruption prosecutor Rosaura Villanueva Arzápalo.

The official said that Góngora Escalante is also charged with the crime of embezzlement to the treasury of the Solidaridad municipality for an amount of 155 million pesos. “We had ministerial personnel assigned to the Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office conducting intelligence and monitoring operations in Mexico City, which led to the suspect’s arrest” she said.
