Boat carrying tourists sinks off Cozumel

COZUMEL, Q. Roo — A boat carrying 10 tourists sank off the shores of Cozumel Wednesday Jan. 3 as it took on water shortly after leaving the island.

The incident happened just 15 minutes after sailing from Cozumel at the height of Curva Tormentos. Passengers on board were instructed by the crew to head to the bow, however, the boat took on water quickly leaving them no choice but to jump into the water.

The Mexican Navy was quick to respond. Other boats were also nearby to lend a hand. All 10 aboard the boat were rescued from the water unharmed. There were no reports of injuries. There was no immediate response as to what caused the boat to sink.
