Progreso Carnival is about to kick off

The Carnival festivities of Progreso are just around the corner. Here is all what you need to know to participate and enjoy this traditional festiviy.

This year, Adela Cortés “Adela I” and Daniel Muñoz “Danny I” will be participating as the Queen and King of the Progreso Carnival. Similarly, there will be kings and queens for the categories of: Governor, Infantile, Juvenile, Handicapped and Senior Citizens.

– The festivities will start on February the 1st, with “La quema del mal humor” (The burning of the bad mood” and the Paseo de Gallo afterwards.

– Saturday, February 3 at 7:00 pm, the coronation of the new kings of the carnival will take place at the Municipal Palace. In the same event, the Infantile, Juvenile and the “Governor” kings and queens will present their “comparsas” or entertaining groups.

– Sunday February 4 at 8:00 pm, the queen of Senior Citizen category and the Infantile kings will be presenting their respective dancing acts, and other comparsas from different institutions and academies will make their feature presentation with spectacular costumes and animated choreographies.

-Thursday February 8, at 4:00 pm, the Children’s parade will be taking place along the streets of Progreso, starting at the Parque de las Madres, continuing along Main Avenue and ending up at the Municipal Palace.

– Friday February 9 at 7:00 pm, the Paseo de Corso kicks off, right on the “Malecón de Progreso” Romeo Frías Bobadilla.

-Saturday February 10, at 7:00 pm, the Night of Fantasy and Masks, which will tour the Malecón and finish at the Municipal Palace, where both the kings and queens of the Progreso Carnival along with schools, and local communites, will present their comparsas.

-Sunday February 11, at 12:00 noon, people will be able to enjoy the Parade of the decorated floats along the Malecón, and attend the feature presentations of different artists whose names will be released in the following days.

-February 11, the regional Monday night, will start at 7:00 pm, and after a brief walk along the Malecón, trova and jarana musical groups will be performing at Independence Park. 8:00 pm.

-Carnival Tuesday, on February 12, commonly known as “La batalla de las flores” (The battle of the flowers), will begin at noon, and again, after the walk along the Malecón, there will be music and dancing shows for all the attendees to enjoy.

-Wednesday February 14th, with the reading of  “Juan Carnaval’s” will, wraps up this year’s Carnival.

-Finally on Saturday February 17, at 4:00 pm there will be a review of the best of the Progreso Carnival, in the auditorium “José María Morelos”.

So, if you think that the Mérida Carnival (recently moved from Paseo de Montejo to the Xmatkuil fairgrounds), has lost part of its “charm”… you can always come to Progreso and be part of this fantastic festivity “by the sea”!
