Leica V-Lux camera: Great holiday gift for travelers

Forbes.com contributor Larry Olmsted writes in this product review that for anything keepsake beyond basic selfies or twitter posts, your smartphone still doesn’t cut it for taking quality photos, especially when you need to zoom in on something further away.

I tackled this subject in great detail here at Forbes a few weeks ago, after testing the Leica V-Lux (and other models and my iPhone7) extensively on safari in Africa.

It’s a real camera with pro level features, but requires zero photographic knowledge and can also be used as a simple autofocus point and shoot. It’s not pocket sized, but takes up less room than a DSLR and interchangeable lenses.

It basically occupies a solid higher middle ground for all but the most accomplished photographers – – who probably won’t need you to get them a camera for a holiday gift anyway.

For everyone else it is pretty amazing, with Leica’s legendary optics, a wider (which is better) lens than other cameras in its class, and a much larger processor (also better) than most competitors, the three key features that result in better picture quality. It zooms to an impressive 400mm, more than the longest telephoto lenses most DSLR owners have, yet can macro focus to as little as three centimeters.

It’s good in low light situations, can shoot preset elapsed photo sessions, true 4K video, and much more, and it is also one of the fastest focusing and picture taking options out there, great for action shots of sports or wildlife.

Leika V Lux

Thanks to the lens width, length and quality of optics, the Leica V-Lux takes great pictures in all sorts of conditions.

But the bottom line is that few people would be disappointed to carry one of these beauties from the most respected camera maker in the world on their next trip, and it is an especially great gift for anyone planning a Bucket List type trip in 2018, a safari, exotic cruise, ancient sites, that kind of thing (about $1,200 USD).
